Philippine Peso Coins and Banknotes

Philippine Coins and Banknotes

1 Peso Coin - American Occupation

One Peso Coin
American Occupation (1905)
photographs courtesy of www.philippinecoins.com

Obverse: Lady Liberty striking an anvil with a hammer with a volcano (Mt. Mayon) erupting in the background, "One Peso", "Filipinas"
Reverse: arms of the US Territories, "United States of America", year mark

Shape: round
Edge: reeded
Material: silver
Designer: Melecio Figueroa

The coin in the image above is very expensive! It's selling for $4000!

The figure of Lady Liberty striking the anvil with a hammer is supposed to depict the work done by the Americans in creating a progressive Philippines. Many suspect that the lady in the figure is actually Blanca, the daughter of the designer.

Arms of the Commonwealth

This is a broadwinged eagle, sitting atop a shield divided into two registers. The upper register has 13 stars, and the lower register has 13 vertical stripes.

Guys guys guys and ladies, you cannot simply sell these 1903-1945 silver coins for $4000, why? Because you have to grade them first by PCGS / NGC if they have a rarity and artistic value of 70 (which is the perfect score for numismatic coins) then you can sell them for $4000 if they have a score of 63 and below they can only be sold for $20~$35 because they'll be considered as bullion (generic precious metal selling slightly under/above melting value) 'cause they have a low grading score.

Hi, I would like to inquire if I can link your blog to mine? I did a post about the Intendencia (mint) and the Quezon/Roosevelt/Murphy coins. I'll appreciate your input or comment.

Salamat!

The value of the coin depends on the CONDITION and DATE of a coin. If the coin is in mint state (MS-60 up to MS) like the one on the photo (1905, 1 peso) then it sells for around $200 - $420, or more if certified by a Numismatic Grading company, but if the condition is on in Fine – Very Fine condition then it is worth only $13.00 - $20.00.

Here is a grading system

(P-1) Poor - Barely identifiable; must have date and mintmark, otherwise pretty thrashed.
(FR-2) Fair - Worn almost smooth but lacking the damage Poor coins have.
(G-4) Good - Heavily worn such that inscriptions merge into the rims in places; details are mostly gone.
(VG-8) Very Good - Very worn, but all major design elements are clear, if faint. Little if any central detail.
(F-12) Fine - Very worn, but wear is even and overall design elements stand out boldly. Almost fully-separated rims.
(VF-20) Very Fine - Moderately worn, with some finer details remaining. All letters of LIBERTY, (if present,) should be readable. Full, clean rims.
(EF-40) Extremely Fine - Lightly worn; all devices are clear, major devices bold.
(AU-50) About Uncirculated - Slight traces of wear on high points; may have contact marks and little eye appeal.
(AU-58) Very Choice About Uncirculated - - Slightest hints of wear marks, no major contact marks, almost full luster, and positive eye appeal.
(MS-60) Mint State Basal - Strictly uncirculated but that's all; ugly coin with no luster, obvious contact marks, etc.
(MS-63) Mint State Acceptable - Uncirculated, but with contact marks and nicks, slightly impaired luster, overall basically appealing appearance. Strike is average to weak.
(MS-65) Mint State Choice - Uncirculated with strong luster, very few contact marks, excellent eye appeal. Strike is above average.
(MS-68) Mint State Premium Quality - Uncirculated with perfect luster, no visible contact marks to the naked eye, exceptional eye appeal. Strike is sharp and attractive.
(MS-69) Mint State All-But-Perfect - Uncirculated with perfect luster, sharp, attractive strike, and very exceptional eye appeal. A perfect coin except for microscopic flaws (under 8x magnification) in planchet, strike, or contact marks.
(MS-70) Mint State Perfect - The perfect coin. There are no microscopic flaws visible to 8x, the strike is sharp, perfectly-centered, and on a flawless planchet. Bright, full, original luster and outstanding eye appeal.

my grandpa owns twenty pieces of the 1907 proof version of US-Philippines One peso silver coins. He sold one in the US auction and fetch around 250 thousand US dollars. I am really amazed how profitable coin collecting is..

Mr. Ken Seymore gave the final presentation entitled ³The Philippine Mystery 1909 Proof Coin². He related a tale presented to him in a letter some many years ago. It was an offer to sell a Philippine 1909 Proof One Peso Coin. The letter told the story of twenty known pieces and that they had been confirmed by the mint as real but not authenticated because they were smuggled by mint employees. Such pieces were not presently known to exist. The pieces are now scattered amongst three owners somewhere in Manila. What puzzled Ken more was why this coin is not presented before? Further research revealed that there was a plan to have them circulated to the Philippines in the same time as the 4 July 1909 Philippine Independence Day ceremony from the United States. The identity of the individual who offered the piece has long ago been forgotten, because at the time it was felt the piece was counterfeit. It was only recently that these new facts have crossed together. To this day the pieces have not shown up. Hopefully, they will, and more research can be done. Several people in the audience showed some excitement over the possibilities of these pieces existing and being real.

Since U.S. mints had to replace nearly all of the Islands silver coinage in 1907 it was not felt that there were enough resources to make 1907 Proof Sets. When Proof Set production resumed in 1908 all of the silver coins, including the 1908 One Peso, were struck in the newly authorized reduced weight and fineness. 1909 was the last year of production for Philippine Proof coins and the only year that the reduced size and weight One Peso Proof not circulated.

I'm a specialist in Philippine coins but I have yet to see 1909 Proof one peso specie.
