Gold in the 10 peso coin?

Word has been spreading that the current 10 peso coin bearing the 2000 and 2001 year mark contains gold. Specifically the inner disc of the coin is said to be worth between 10 to 14 karats, the reason why some people are hammering them out and casting them into "gold" rings.

I chanced upon a man selling some of these "gold" rings. He also presented the remains of a ten piso coin and claimed two coins are melted to create one ring. He was selling the ring for 100 pesos.

So is there gold in the current 10 peso coin?
I don't think so. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the inner disc of the coin is made of an aluminum-bronze alloy (92% copper, 6% aluminum, 2% nickel).

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas could not be senseless to put gold into millions of coins with a face value of only 10 pesos. It might look like gold, but it isn't necessarily gold.

Illegal
Hammering out the core of the 10 peso coins is a violation of Article 164 of the Revised Penal Code (An Act Prohibiting and Penalizing Defacement, Mutilation, Tearing, Burning or Destruction of Central Bank Notes and Coins). Selling of these mutilated coins is a violation of Article 165.
Art. 164. Mutilation of coins; Importation and utterance of mutilated coins. — The penalty of prision correccional in its minimum period and a fine not to exceed P2,000 pesos shall be imposed upon any person who shall mutilate coins of the legal currency of the United States or of the Philippine Islands or import or utter mutilated current coins, or in connivance with mutilators or importers.

Art. 165. Selling of false or mutilated coin, without connivance. — The person who knowingly, although without the connivance mentioned in the preceding articles, shall possess false or mutilated coin with intent to utter the same, or shall actually utter such coin, shall suffer a penalty lower by one degree than that prescribed in said articles.

I can't believe how stupid and gullible some people are. Of course it's a hoax! Why would the BSP put gold in a coin that has a face value of just P10? Are they a bunch of morons? Of course not. Gold reserves are heavily controlled and regulated by the BSP and they never issue it for normal circulation. Heck they rarely issue gold commemorative coins at very low mintage. They mostly keep it in reserve to ensure that the philippine sovereign state has ability to meet its obligations. Most of the gold reserves are in the possession of the US and other first world countries. They just buy it and store it. Most governments do. Rarely do they sell their gold reserves. A fraction goes to the market etc. This is because dollars will rise and fall but gold will always be gold. So now we have stories that our government would release gold into circulation for P10? ano tyo tanga?!? The morons are those who actually believe the stories. Bobo talaga. No wonder a lot of pinoys frequently fall victims to any get rich quick schemes such as that legacy banking group and pyramid schemes. We are so desperate to better our lives that it leads to stupidity. If it's too good to be true then it probably ain't. Whatever happened to "sipag at tiyaga?"

It does matter because the only people who are spreading these stories are the scammers and would-be scammers who would take undue advantage of those people who don't know any better.

Obviously you're one of those people, who if given the opportunity, would take advantage of your fellow Filipino. shame on you.

guys don't be close minded. hindi ba kayo naccurious? di naman kasi kakalat yan ng walang pinagmulan. buti sana kung sa isang lugar lang kumalat yan. pero tignan nyo, d rin naman talaga sya kalat, iilan lang tayo sa mga nakakaalam ng issue na to. haha! i wonder. but for now, magcocollect nalang ako. wala naman mawawala. haha! i'm not saying na naniniwala ako sa issue pero bakit naman din ako maniniwala agad sa BSP? let's be fair and logical. ndi naman porke BSP e un na ang totoo, pano kung may pinagtatakpan lang? basta tlga sa government ang hirap paniwalaan agad. investigate and wag agad ijudge yung mga naniniwala na akala mo e bobo cla. for now..i am neutral... i must search or rather "wait" for more info. parang ang hirap din kasi paniwalaan na may gold, pero kung binibili sya ng mahal, ano kayang meron sakanya? un ang dapat alamin...not the gold issue ;)

meron akong theory, lets use our imagination: officers in BSP who wants to rob money intentionally mix gold to 2001 10 peso coins and plans to collect them later outside, by this plan they will be successful extracting gold from BSP without being detected. I believe the executive officers knows about this , maybe just maybe the people who are concern in mixing metals are also involve in this conspiracy, they should be questioned, the NBI should look at this issue, worst scenario; that there is anomally up to executive office.... just look at the timing ,smoke comes out at this time, when the 2010 election is fast approaching. hmmmm just a theory.. now i going to put down my spy movie cd.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anonymous9:14 PM

hmmmn... This is interesting, why not collect the coins? There's nothing to lose, but to think bout it, it's maybe true that there is a gold in the coin? Hey if if a wise millionaire, I will never put my money in the bank, coz' the bank can be robbed, right, I would keep it in a place where no one would notice it... Just like the the 10 peso coin, no one would suspect that there's a gold in the coin, maybe the bsp is trying to cover it up, so the people would stop their interest of collecting and selling the ten peso coin...(hey, no hard feelings... We are free to have a comment here in this topic... ty^^)

  12. Anonymous3:56 PM

i agree with most comments here. di naman kakalat ang balita ng ganun n lang. There might just really be some conspiracy. its hard to take out gold at BSP and the most ingenious plan is to mix it with the coin with the intention to retrieved it later. at wala namang aamin n may gold nga sa 10 peso coin. but di b kayo nagtataka halos wala n sa circulation ang 2000 at 2001 coin kahit kami madalas mamalit sa banko wala n talaga ganun date... anu un nawalang bula... at meron may fake n malamang sila din nagpakalat para mawalan tayo ng interes...samin nga may namimili p ng 100 to 200 each coin

hi guys this is Janice Monastrial from Batangas, you know what, for all of these issues, we can't deny that if we say "coin or coins" we're not giving more importance especially spending it, its really easy to spend anywhere, anytime, this issue is just giving coins a chance to have their importance to us, more people are searching for this coins co'z of that said mixed "gold" in it..., but the sense is the "gold" we are mentioning is that the "importance" of coins not just having a smaller value, but without coins, bills are useless!! Think of it guys!! NOW, COINS ARE IMPORTANT, WITH OR WITHOUT GOLD, GIVE IMPORTANCE IN IT, COLLECT AND SAVE IT!

ganti2 xe yan... the ten peso coins were originally commissioned during the time of the then Pres. Joseph Estrada. It was supposed to be a collector's item coin mixed with gold. It's supposed market were people with local coin and bill fetishes. When the new administration took power, the coins were either out in circulation or in everybody's pockets and piggy banks. BSP didn't like the word out into the public cause it will make a hell of a coin collection frenzy. so they secretly sent agents who would collect the coins. problem is, the word got out to a handful of people and here we are having an intelligent discussion about a ten peso coin that's really worth a thousand pesos in the black market. thanks for reading.

While the 'conspiracy theory' is compelling, unfortunately it was probably the brainchild of someone with too much time on their hands.
There is a more-mundane explanation for the gold-like appearance of 2000-2003 (not just until 2001) 10-peso cores. If you compare a 200-2003 10-peso coin with one from 2004-onwards, there is indeed a noticeable difference in the way the core tarnishes, with the older ones tarnishing less, and more easily polishing off on the high spots of the design with wear, as well as the tarnish itself having a 'softer' golden-brown color. Newer coins develop a darker, duller, more-uniform tarnish that does not rub off the high spots, and do it quicker. Which tells me the composition is different, but "all that glitters is not gold".
First, it can't be 14k or even 9-10k gold, which do not tarnish to anywhere near the extent that even the old coins do (just compare with a wedding ring). Low-karat gold alloys (below 9k) are prone to tarnish somewhat.
But gold is a very dense metal, weighing about 19 g/cm^3; so unless the amount of gold is truly minute (which would render the conspiracy pointless), these coins would weigh considerably more than they do--and that would be a dead giveaway!
The only way to make the coin's weight more-or-less the same would be to use either more gold, which as explained, couldn't the case, and a lighter alloy for the outer ring (which also isn't the case); or very little gold substituting for one of the other metals in the alloy--so little as not to unduly affect the weight, bringing us back to the former argument and rendering the conspiracy moot.
The difference in tarnishing characteristics of the older vs. newer coins can be explained by a change in the composition of the core--older BSP publications specify 'aluminum bronze' as the alloy, while the new informational circular states 'nickel brass'--the same alloy as the current 5-peso denomination.
Aluminum bronze can resemble gold, with a rich golden color, and is less prone to tarnish (and slower to do so) than nickel brass, owing to the oassivation effect of the aluminum (which is why that metal is added to the alloy). In fact, some European, New Zealand, and Scandinavian coins are made of an aluminum-bronze alloy called 'Nordic Gold'--specifically chosen for a golden look and tarnish-resistance--although there is no gold content.
In all cases, the color comes from copper, the main constituent of all these alloys, which when mixed with white metals changes from its natural pinkish-orange hue to a golden color.
So there you have it, folks--myth busted. Still, aluminum-bronze does make for a nice gold substitute for jewelry due to its tarnish-resistance and rich gold color. Not that I'm condoning an illegal practice, mind you! ;-)

Nung cnb kong meron kami at madami. Sbi nya bblin daw nya agad pag meron kming cnamang gold accs.
